April 2010 Meeting and May meeting events

We had a very plesant meeting on Wednesday evening. There were a number of models brought along to the meeting for the theme, "Conflicts in Europe". Steve Harris and Vince Novac tendered their apologies.

It was decided that the next meetings theme will be "Anything Colonial".

We will also have a special Meeting Build event, whereby members are to bring along a kit of some sort (this may not be a figure or tiny piece of equipment , but rather a vehicle, aircraft or ship etc.) and actually build it at the meeting. It obviously won t be finished then but we hope to see finished models at the next meeting. So don t choose some over-complicated kit, but rather something that is easy to build. The kit must be STARTED at the meeting, so no partially built kits are allowed! You must bring along your own, tools, paint, glue, and if necessary light and spectacles!

This promises to be a lot of fun! So come on guys, get Grocking in those kits and select one for the Meeting Build!

Here are some photos from this last meeting. (Sorry Sean I didnt seem to get a pic of your Armoured Figure Model, but hopefully we will see a feature on it in the Member Builds section?!)

There was a very good turnout for the competition and a large number of models were on display for viewing. The largest category - no surprise - was Armour Pre 1945. There were two judging teams and a chief judge. Thank you to all those that judged, for your sterling effort in support of the club.

The standard was vey high as usual and the two judging teams had a difficult task accurately judging the various entries. Well done to all the participants. A big thank you to Bruce and Cherryl Clark who ran the judging program and did all the hard work making sure that all ran smoothly with the results.

The MOY judge-off was a close affair which necessitated a second round of judging due to a tie.

The eventual MOY winner was Terry Hargreaves "USS Copahee", (above) a largely scratch built 1/350 escort carrier. This superb waterline model featured incredible detail, including multi-piece AA Guns, figures and even pilots in the Avenger aircraft on the flight deck!

Coming in a very close second was one of Johan Brummer s usual masterpieces, a diorama named "Russians!" (above), featuring a Panther and burnt out T-34. Not to be missed amongst an amazing amount of detail in this piece was a German soldier caught off guard, running and trailing the toilet paper he was about to use!

The awards evening was held later and was a very pleasant affair. Unfortunately there were a number of members who could not attend due to various arrangements and illness. Johan Brummer s "Russians" was judged the "Best On Show" by popular vote by all those who attended the dinner.

On the whole the MOY went off extremely well with no issues or undue delays. Well done to all those who assisted in the organising and to Terry Hargreaves who organised the lovely venue again for us this year.

Pictures of the models will be posted in the Gallery section under MOY 2009.

Site Statistics!

The IPMS Durban website continues to grow its popularity.

IPMS Durban Website News.
June 2009

Hello to our site and club members.

Its nice to see membership growing steadily on our new site. Participation in Forums is growing steadily too, with some nice topics and replies.

There is really nothing earth shattering to report this month. I’ve been doing a bit of building and trying to make progress on my myriad of WIP kits. I am battling through some individual track link projects as well, which keep slowing me down and inducing me to open another kit and start building it! The Super 14 Finals intruded on my build time too, but I don’t really mind that, seeing as though we klapped those New Zealanders! J
So it was like SOS, “same ‘ol shyte” different day. This led me to wondering the other day that perhaps we need to shake things up a bit and coax us members out of our comfort zones. What about a “Build what you don’t build” mini competition? We could get the members collectively to vote and decide for each person what type of model they should be asked to build, instead of leaving it up to the person. Kind of placing you at the mercy of the members sort of thing. What do you think? Wonder what you guys would get me to build?? We would certainly ask <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Dudley to build a train! Humm, and George would be asked to build an aircraft,…. Oh no he did actually finish one recently, so we would have to get him to build something else. And no Vince, no crashed aircraft dioramas allowed!

I saw something the other day on a modeling club site overseas where they have an “extra and spare parts” swap meet. Everybody brings along their spares box for all and sundry to rummage through and see if there is something they want to swop or beg for! It sounds quite fun. Like a decal swap meet as well. Perhaps we could do something similar one meeting? Lets give it some thought and chat about it at the meeting.

Pre-Registration reminder

Just to remind members, we have pre-registered all our existing club members who have not yet registered on the site. The reason for this is that in future all Club Newsletters will be sent out from the Club Site.

If you have not yet registered and are receiving this newsletter then you are one of them!! You need to Login to the site using your email address as the username and the default password (12345) that has been allocated to you. To activate your membership you must then click Edit My Profile (situated top left on the site page) and edit your details. You will be able to change the password to one of your own creation for security.

Please take some time to browse the site and to read the FAQ s in the Forum section. Remember registration is free and is only required to participate in the blog and forums. Have fun!

Next Club Meeting

The next club meeting will be on Wednesday 3rd June 2009 at 7:00pm at the German club in Westville as usual. (That’s THIS Wed. blokes!!)

There is no set theme for this meeting but please feel free to bring along the usual Show and Tell models and other goodies with you. I am sure Johan will hold a mini competition as usual for those that bring along a model or two. I will sponsor a small prize for the winner. ( I am disqualified L )
